Arcology: In
1969, Soleri published Arcology: City in the Image of Man. The book laid out a theory of high-density
urban development driven by the evolutionary imperatives of complexity
and miniaturization.
Soleri proposed the construction
of entire cities as single, contiguous structures, rising as high
as a kilometer but occupying only a fraction of the ground acreage
of cities of similar size. The book ended with 30 arcology designs,
ranging from a population of 6,000,000 -- Noahbabel -- to 1,500
-- Arcosanti 1969.
For this webpage, we have focused
on the original drawings and scrolls that led to these designs.
The documentation
of the Soleri Drawings has been made possible in part by
a grant from the Graham
Foundation for Advanced Study in the Fine Arts.
