Living at Arcosanti
livingarcosanti

The living and working experience at Arcosanti is an integral part of the Workshop as a learning experience, and to receive a taste of the type of urban living we hope the Arcology would generate. For the length of your workshop you will work here, and live here as a part of the Arcosanti community.

Arcosanti is a "company town" with a college campus feeling to it.
It must be stated this is not a commune or an intentional community. We are an educational organization/facility dedicated to teaching by building the physical structure, which will eventually house a community of considerable size. We are trying to construct a space that encourages culture and urban living instead of one that dissipates it, to this aim we host monthly cultural events, not to mention the spontaneous cultural events by the residents, parties, fun and just hanging out, with a respect for others who live at Arcosanti.

To learn about the community life of Arcosanti the workshop will interact during seminar week and the rest of their time with the Arcosanti Community.

Arcosanti is a construction site where most residents live in the various completed buildings.  Workshop participants are primarily housed near other residents in dormitory-style accommodations for the duration of their stay. The dorms are partially completed rooms that will eventually be finished into apartments.  The dorm facilities are shared with other workshop participants (various rooms can accommodate 2 to 8 people).  There is minimal heating and no air-conditioning!  Although the rooms are shared, there are places to lock up valuables.  For those people interested in a private room, it may be possible to upgrade to a guest room for an extra cost, depending on availability.  Participants interested in upgrading to a guest room must contact the workshop coordinator well in advance.

Becoming a Resident
To become a resident at Arcosanti one must first complete a Five-Week Workshop. Many people choose to stay on at Arcosanti for periods from one month to many years to live, work and participate in the unique life of the prototype Arcology. We are always looking for good people to work with the Project on an extended basis. If you would like to stay on and help after your Workshop, you may apply for a volunteer position in a specific area. We expect volunteers to participate 40 hours a week in their departments.

Paid employment possibilities will depend your work performance, available staff positions, and your long term commitment. In considering persons for employment, we evaluate your performance during the workshop and look at other factors such as responsibility and self-motivation. If there are no immediate openings, you are welcome to remain as a volunteer until a position becomes available.

If you know you are interested in long term paid employment you should contact the Manager of the Department you want to be in, or ask the Workshop Coordinator for a list of available positions.
