Silt Casting
During Seminar Week, September Workshoppers learned the process of siltcasting
from Silt Workshop Coordinator Randall Schultz.
9/12/01
Workshoppers mixed the silt (or earth) from the riverbed with water to obtain
the proper consistency.
9/12/01
Then Workshoppers helped construct small wooden squares or framework to hold the silt.
9/12/01
Then they packed the silt into the wood framework, smoothed it out, and pressed
designs into silt using a variety of tools.
9/12/01
Plaster was then poured over the silt to cast a relief of the design.

In the preliminary round, the six teams were split in two groups of three teams.
Arcosanti, Flagstaff, and Prescott competed and then Tempe, Tucson and Mesa.
The winners, Prescott and Tucson continued on to the finals. Pictured are members of the Tucson (left) and Tempe (right) teams.
5/30/01
Judges were volunteers from the audience and had to rate each poem on a scale of 1-10.

Each team also brought a featured poet to read. Randall Schultz read three poems
and invited Workshop Coordinator Wes Ozier (pictured) on stage to read his hilarious and now famous gender-bending poem.

When they were ready, the garden crew turned the cover crop in by disking it repeatedly in different directions.
Then they made furrows in the soil and through flood irrigation, watered
the field all day and night for three days and then 4 days after in preparation to plant corn.

On Tuesday morning, Adam, the workshoppers, employees and volunteers from several different
departments joined together to plant 100 rows of blue and white varieties of Pueblo Corn.
