Graduation!
The November Workshop posed outside of the library; a scenic spot with a view of Camp; for their grad photo. This is the last workshop of 2001 - the workshop program will resume again on Feb. 3rd, 2002. [Photos and text by: Jennifer Thornton]

Jean and Tom were November workshoppers that were missing from the graduation shot.

12/18/01
The graduation ceremony was held after a meeting to discuss and evaluate their workshop experience. Carlo Tralongo, one of the students from Roma Tre (Italian Promotion Project) received his certificate from Liz.

The greenhouse attached to the Camp bathrooms needed a new membrane. Pictured: Agriculture Manager Adam Nordfors and Barrett cut the plastic to size in the Vaults and then carted it down to Camp. [Photos and text by: Jennifer Thornton]

12/12/01
The greenhouse sans membrane.

12/12/01
Barrett tightened down one of the eight boards that secures the membrane to the greenhouse.

12/12/01
It took a crew of eleven people to complete the task.

12/12/01
Everyone had to simultaneously pull the heavy plastic in order to create a smooth, tight surface.

12/12/01
The crew had to maintain the tension until Adam and Barrett could tighten down the frame.

12/12/01
Two teams alternated screwing down the boards running down the sides of the building.

12/12/01
Brett admires the finished product. Now, the greenhouse will provide a viable space for winter gardens and keep the bathroom toasty during the cooler months.

November Workshopper Brendan Doherty also spent a good part of his workshop working with Ron in the Metalshop.

12/07/01
One of their projects was replacing a railing leading up the sides of the Lab Building.

12/07/01
Other current projects include constructing a rack for the "site truck" and fabricating woodstoves for cubes (housing) in Camp.

Departures
Tasuku Matsuyama, a resident/construction volunteer for 9 months, is leaving this weekend to return to Japan. He did an amazing job of transforming his spartan room in E.C.1 into a very cool Japanese style living space. Lit stairs lead up to a loft/sleeping space with privacy screens that can slide open for air. Due to the fact Shoji gami (special paper for screens) is rare in Arizona, he used canvas to allow the passage of light. [Photos and text by: Jennifer Thornton]

Silt Casting
During Seminar Week, September Workshoppers learned the process of siltcasting from Silt Workshop Coordinator Randall Schultz.

9/12/01
Workshoppers mixed the silt (or earth) from the riverbed with water to obtain the proper consistency.

9/12/01
Then Workshoppers helped construct small wooden squares or framework to hold the silt.

9/12/01
Then they packed the silt into the wood framework, smoothed it out, and pressed designs into silt using a variety of tools.

Plaster was then poured over the silt to cast a relief of the design. [Photo by: Michael Muntinga]
Due to recent events, coverage of the August Graduation and Party will be posted on Monday.

The Crane Bucket also serves as a concrete placement device in high places, just like the portable concrete pump we used in the last pour at this East Crescent Phase V construction. The consistency of the water-cement ratio is always a critical issue when it comes to hitting the optimum balance between the workability to provide easier concrete placement and the low slump(water) requirement to achieve higher material strength. In the preliminary round, the six teams were split in two groups of three teams. Arcosanti, Flagstaff, and Prescott competed and then Tempe, Tucson and Mesa. The winners, Prescott and Tucson continued on to the finals. Pictured are members of the Tucson (left) and Tempe (right) teams.

5/30/01
Judges were volunteers from the audience and had to rate each poem on a scale of 1-10.

Each team also brought a featured poet to read. Randall Schultz read three poems and invited Workshop Coordinator Wes Ozier (pictured) on stage to read his hilarious and now famous gender-bending poem.

When they were ready, the garden crew turned the cover crop in by disking it repeatedly in different directions. Then they made furrows in the soil and through flood irrigation, watered the field all day and night for three days and then 4 days after in preparation to plant corn.

5/25/01
On Tuesday morning, Adam, the workshoppers, employees and volunteers from several different departments joined together to plant 100 rows of blue and white varieties of Pueblo Corn.

Construction is really making progress, especially with the added assistance of the May Workshop. Here they are setting up rebar that will reinforce several partition walls in Phase V. Normally the concrete walls are poured on the ground and then tilted up. However, Construction has rented special formwork that will enable the crew to quickly pour a wall in place.
