Silt Casting
During Seminar Week, September Workshoppers learned the process of siltcasting
from Silt Workshop Coordinator Randall Schultz.
9/12/01
Workshoppers mixed the silt (or earth) from the riverbed with water to obtain
the proper consistency.
9/12/01
Then Workshoppers helped construct small wooden squares or framework to hold the silt.
9/12/01
Then they packed the silt into the wood framework, smoothed it out, and pressed
designs into silt using a variety of tools.
9/12/01
Plaster was then poured over the silt to cast a relief of the design.

Arcosanti, Flagstaff, and Prescott competed and then Tempe, Tucson and Mesa.
The winners, Prescott and Tucson continued on to the finals. Pictured are members of the Tucson (left) and Tempe (right) teams.

Judges were volunteers from the audience and had to rate each poem on a scale of 1-10.

Each team also brought a featured poet to read. Randall Schultz read three poems
and invited Workshop Coordinator Wes Ozier (pictured) on stage to read his hilarious and now famous gender-bending poem.

When they were ready, the garden crew turned the cover crop in by disking it repeatedly in different directions.
Then they made furrows in the soil and through flood irrigation, watered
the field all day and night for three days and then 4 days after in preparation to plant corn.

Arcosanti's new 12,500 gallon polypropylene water cistern recently arrived, replacing
the older metal tank and allowing for nearly twice the water storage capacity

In an Arcology, the buildings respond to the changes of the seasons, usually by
employing the devices of what Paolo Soleri calls, "garment architecture." One
such space employing this device is the three-story atrium in the Crafts
III building. It is passively heated by the sun through the course of the
day and the warm air from the lower floors rises and gathers in the pyramid-shaped
glass cap of the structure. During the winter months, in order to redistribute
this warm air, a 40-foot, cloth cylinder
is slipped over a circular frame which houses a fan, and hung in the center of
the atrium. The fan pulls the warmed air gathered in the glass roof-cap at the
top of the cylinder and pushes it down through the cloth tube where it pours out
onto the first floor, rewarming the space. Photo and text by Benjamin Ericson.

Sited on a secluded mesa, two miles from the nearest highway, residents at Arcosanti
enjoy a pristine habitat right at their doorstep. This exposure fosters a keen
sense of responsibility in maintaining a clean environment. We fastidiously recycle
and reuse everything we can, and in the the spirit of stewardship, we also participate in the Adopt A Highway Program,
maintaining a section of Highway 17, near our exit at Cordes Junction. The prize

With the recently poured concrete footings approaching a cured state, the East
Crescent Complex comes one step closer to completion. The design for the Complex
follows the mixed-use pattern prevalent within all buildings at Arcosanti. The
lower level spaces overlooking the ampitheater are planned for semi-public use,
such possibilities including: a cafe, a recreation/health center, and resident-businesses.
The upper floors will be reserved for shared-use
and living quarters. Photo and text by Benjamin Ericson.

Much of the detailing-work in the construction of Arcosanti is performed on-site.
Cabinets, trim, fixtures, lighting, and railings, to name a few, are all elements
which are fabricated in the various shops. The reuse of materials in these fabrications
is always desirable, as well, and is an example of frugality in practice. In this photo, current workshopper, James
Davenport, who has opted to spend his time in the Metalshop cuts apart some scrap
metal to obtain pieces which will be welded into a railing. Photo and text by
Benjamin Ericson.

Poetic, acrobatic, and pyromanic, the performance art group,Flam
Chen returned to Arcosanti last week for another brilliant and inspired show. The Vaults at the heart of Arcosanti are an ultimately ideal
venue for Flam Chen. The soaring architectural space provides a theateresque backdrop,
the reinforced concrete construction allows for solid riggings to swing from,
and being an open-air space, products of combustion can escape easily. Photo and

Arcosanti's 860+ acre property is rich in geologic and ethnographic history. Native
American Indians made many settlements in the area and some of the signs of their
presence still remain. Pictographs are to be found throughout the site and there

wash. In this photo, Roger Tomalty explains to workshoppers some of the archaeological
