Energy Apron Prototype (Greenhouse)
Energy Apron Phase II includes a 10,000 sqft small-scale greenhouse prototype incorporating the present guest rooms. The current construction phase consists of one-third (3,400 sqf section that includes two bays 22' wide and 76' long) of the proposed prototype. The ground was broken in the Fall of 2010. To date (summer of 2012), most of the terraces are in place and the structural system to support the metal frames, which will eventually hold the membranes, is being built.
The Goals of this phase are to gain testing and research opportunities for sustainable technologies, climate controled agricultural systems and renewable energy systems, while increasing the capacity for on-site food production. It has been an exciting addition to our workshop program, enabling us to extend our hands-on experiential learning to the participants. We are also seeking collaboration opportunities with institutions that are interested in the project.
The Construction of the project is proceeding with the generous contributions of local industries, providing professional and in-kind donations. The project team that consists of workshoppers, volunteers, interns, and dedicated planning and construction staff, has been the driving force of the project. Please see the ARCONEWS blog for the project progress.
