IUAV
School of Architecture: Lean Alternative Workshop
IUAV
School of Architecture in Venice,
one of the most prestigious in Italy, has started an innovative session of summer intensive programs. The intention is to facilitate the expressive capacities of IUAV students, putting a consistent amount of space and tools at their disposal in each classroom.
For the second year, one of the summer courses has been about Paolo Soleri’s Lean Alternative and Arcosanti.
The program included both theoretical and studio classes. The theoretical ones were organized on the model of the traditional Arcosanti School Of Thought and were mostly based on the most recent book initiative QUADERNI. The studio classes included a Silt Cast Workshop and the Design Studio which offered students an opportunity to explore alternative design solutions for the buildings already built, with wooden models of structures according to the Arcology theory.
The 2004 course has been organized and delivered by Architect Antonio Fragiacomo, Structural Engineer Marco Felici and Cosanti Research Associate Roger Tomalty, with the precious help of Daniela Bruni, Maurizio Ranzi (Roma Tre University), Sandra Suatoni (Istituto Italiano Per La Grafica), Lorenzo Alfieri, Robert Clyde and Arcosanti residents Mary Hoadley and Matteo Di Michele.
