Our
tile clay is prepared in the following way. A large
amount of slip is poured into flat plaster filled boxes.
When the slip becomes firm enough to handle we pass
it through a machine called a pug mill. This machine
squeezes the air bubbles from the clay and produces
a log of consistent density. Next these logs are passed
through a slab roller which produces large slabs of
clay of a pre-set thickness. Tiles of various dimensions
are cut from this slab, hand impressed with one-of-a-kind
designs and dried on boards.
