The Planning
Department’s
primary focus is the design and execution of drawings of
the East Crescent Complex. Most of our drawings are done
using
the AutoCAD drafting program. It is important that Planning
stay ahead of the Construction crew in order to provide
all
of the drawings and information needed by the crew. The Planning
Department is also responsible for planning and designing
restoration projects on site, as well as doing some research
on alternative materials and construction systems.
In the
design on the East Crescent, we are constantly faced
with architectural debate as we try to reflect Arcology
concepts such as mixed use space allocation, households with
shared
facilities, frugality of space, incorporating passive solar
designs, etc.
Since working in the Planning Department requires an Architectural
background and computer skills, we prefer people who will
commit to a three month internship. However, a workshopper
whose portfolio and experience warrants may be considered
for a Planning/Construction time split assignment. In such
a case, we would look for projects relating to the current
work in construction.
From time to time, we have models to
build and we may consider help from workshoppers who
have
model building skills. We also get out of the office to
participate in synergies, site chores, and the recycling
program.
Because
we teach by Hands-On experience, it is important that
workshoppers work only part-time in the office.
The Planning department
is located in the Office Level of
the Soleri Office Drafting (S.O.D.) Building. The main
advantage of this location is its proximity to the construction
site!
It is a very pleasant building with beautiful views of the
mesa. A swamp cooler on the roof makes it one of the coolest
work places on site!
