Paolo and Colly Soleri purchase the land that became the Cosanti Foundation complex. Construction of Soleri's experimental Earth House, originally designed as his residence, although he never occupied.

Banks Upshaw, Soleri's first apprentice, completed the kitchen and bathrooms in the Earth House and later occupied the house with his wife in 1960. Soleri started an enclosed Design Studio and outdoor Ceramics Studio with a Bell Assembly area.

North Studio construction begun. As a mostly underground structure, open only to the south, the building features a large skylight in the middle. Initially designed as architectural studio, but later used as model making studio. It is currently used as a gallery space.

1962

Silt Pile number 1: models silt-cast; North Studio completed; extensive landscaping. The late Ivan Pintar assisted Soleri and managed Cosanti activities. He lived in the Earth House until his untimely death in 1994.

Silt Pile number 2: continued work on silt-cast models. Silt Pile number 3: building begun on new earth-cast structures.

Silt Pile number 4: two earth-cast structures to enlarge the studio facilities (Metal Studio) built; North Apse, the first Apse (a quarter spherical standing shell) that welcomes the Cosanti visitors, begun.

Silt Pile number 5: construction of Cast Cast House; a second apse 30 feet in diameter (the South Apse) and the adjoining Tunnel begun.

Continued work on preliminary Arcosanti designs; began production of working drawings of peripheral structures (Foundry Apse, Ceramics Apse and South Vault) on the mesa building site. At the Construction Camp near the Agua Fria River, temporary living areas are set up consisting of kitchen and sanitation facilities; construction of Camp concrete casting plant for precasting components of eight-foot cubes used as cells for living quarters.

1971

Continued work on Camp site with office and drafting room built; construction of the Octagon, an all-purpose space for group activities; Wood Shop built. On the mesa, aerial survey; water to the site; Ceramics Apse and South Vault footings.

1972

South Vault erected by June 21, major portion of the heavy construction Ceramics Apse completed; electricity brought to the Site. Foundry Apse excavation begun, with footings cast and walls precast; East Housing begun; Crafts III ("The Restaurant") begun with hand excavation, pouring of footings and rock retaining walls.

1973

East Housing heavy construction and interior completed; West Housing begun; more footings of Crafts III poured and floor panels set; "waffle slab" of second floor set; most of he first three (of the four) floors precast of the south half (Phase 1) completed; Ceramics Apse work finished; a major portion of the heavy construction of the Foundry Apse completed (including precast arch erection and poured-in-place silt-cast shell.)

1974

Second Vault (North Vault) begun, to provide additional sheltered work space. Retaining walls poured in front of Ceramics Apse for the Amphitheater which faces the apse. Most exterior work completed on the Ceramics Apse. Continued work on Crafts III: two-story foyer and circle panels erected; completion of phase one of Crafts III--the first three floors of the south half of the building; phase two (the north half) of Crafts III begun; at completion, Crafts III contains apartments, public dining room (the Cafe), rock garden with refreshment facilities and exhibition space. Swimming Pool excavation and construction begun. West Housing heavy construction and interior completed; lower work area of Foundry Apse constructed and furnace wells and floor slabs added; landscaping undertaken; new access roads cut. Surveys and initial work on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin Cloister, a conference center with residences, performance and exhibition spaces. Arcosanti selected by the State of Arizona for a Bicentennial site in the Horizons '76 program.

Antioch building was built by students from Antioch College in Ohio participating in special workshop program at Cosanti, using earthcasting technique for curved ceiling designs.

1975

North Vault in process of being erected. First occupation of Crafts III. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin Cloister foundations dug and other construction preparations made. "Arcosanti Events," a program of various types of entertainment in the Ceramics Apse, initiated. Haystack School of Crafts four-week workshop conducted at Arcosanti; two kilns built.

1976

Completion of North Vault; construction of the Lab Building; Redesign of Arcosanti to apply the Two Suns Arcology concept. Festival at Arcosanti. Completion of Antioch Building at Cosanti. Haystack School of Crafts four-week workshops repeated at Arcosanti, leaving a fireplace corner in the Valetta canyon and weaving looms.

1977

Further work on the Swimming Pool, Skylight topped the Crafts III building, Winter Woodworking workshops. East Crescent drawings begun. "Health and Healing" Festival and Conference at Arcosanti in October.

1978

Camp Greenhouse prototype; completion of Arcosanti Swimming Pool; Cosanti Gallery opened; Arcosanti Gallery opened on the second floor of Crafts III; preliminary design of Arcosanti Critical Mass Plan. Festival and Conference "Art and the Environment," in October, the largest at Arcosanti ever.

1979

East Crescent continued, Music Center built.
1981

East Crescent continued, beginning work on interiors of the S.O.D. Unit. Bakery at Arcosanti opened. Cafe moved to the second floor. Colly Soleri Music Center established.

East Crescent continued. Peach Orchard planted with funds from ATEC: Greening the Earth. Festival "Food Chain, Food, Famine, and Metamorphosis."

1984

Construction of first Greenhouse housing unit below Swimming Pool, Sky Suite completed, Space For Peace Gallery opened in the South Vault, Camp landscaped and part of Plywood City dismantled, two new wells drilled, fish pond and Boschetto established.

Construction continues on tiered seating areas of the East Crescent Amphitheater.

1989

East Crescent Amphitheater completed, including the installation of the canopy. Arcomart established. In May, the "Minds for History" program was initiated with the first conference held in the new East Crescent Amphitheater. Second "Minds for History" conference held in October.

1990

Renovation, maintenance, railings, landscaping and paved walkways. Renovation of the Camp courtyard, Camp bathrooms and some of the cubes. Third "Minds for History" conference held in October in East Crescent Amphitheater. "Arcosanti Events," including concerts, Pictograph 2000 lightshow performances, and the Twentieth Anniversary Arcosanti Reunion.

1991

Renovation of the original Camp kitchen into a 10 room Bunkhouse (Plywood City). Start of a complete overhaul of the Camp electrical system. Installation of a Fire Suppression System in the Foundry, and Water Access line for a fire engine from the Pool to the La Loggia level; first pre-cast panels for initial section of Energy Apron, below the Swimming Pool. July 4th Alumni Reunion. Fourth "Minds for History" conference, a one-day event featuring Paolo Soleri, held in October.

1992

Continued concrete work on East Crescent second and third units (East Crescent phase II). Silt Carving Workshops, a one-week program for adults and one-day program for kids, offered. Fifth "Minds for History" conference, with Stephen J. Gould featured.

1993

Continued concrete work and interior finishing on East Crescent phase II. Excavation begun for East Crescent units 4 & 5 (phase III); footings & slabs poured for phase III Heat Duct Tunnel. Major exhibition installation material production: SOLERI'S CITIES, Architecture for the Planet Earth and Beyond, produced at Arcosanti and held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts in Arizona.

1994

Continued interior finishing on East Crescent phase II; 7 of 12 living units are completed and occupied. Continued excavation and Concrete work in phase III; Heat Duct Tunnel and footings are completed. Planning undertaken for the rest of the East Crescent. Arcomedia program initiated. Model: Asteromo '94, commissioned and executed for the Mei Center for the Arts in Japan.

Interior finishing on East Crescent phase II is virtually complete. Continued concrete work on phase III; first floor completed, second floor begun. Rock stairs built at the Greenhouse Guest Rooms. Rock walls between the Foundry and Crafts III rebuilt and reinforced. Extensive blasting for the Heat Duct Tunnel trench for the rest of the East Crescent. Arcosanti On-line established. 2001

Work on the East Crescent Phases I, II, and III completed five units of the west half (Units 1-5) of this building. With the onset of Phase V of this project the final 5 units (6-10) were begun at the same time. The first floor slabs and walls were completed, along with many of the beams supporting the 2nd floor slab. The Arcosanti 5000 design (population 5000) was introduced at the Paradox III conference

2002
