Arrived at Taliesin West (AZ) as a fellow of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation on scholarship. Among projects undertaken during stay in America were the design of the "Beast" Bridge included in the book "The Architecture of Bridges" by Elizabeth Mock published by the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.

After apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright, Soleri remained in the desert camping near Phoenix and collaborated with Mark Mills in designing and constructing a glass-domed house (The Dome House) in Cave Creek, which received wide recognition and publication for incorporating passive principles for heating and cooling • Published in Built in U.S.A.: Post-War Architecture, edited by Henry Russell Hitchcock and Arthur Drexler • Arizonian Portfolio: Collection of small habitat designs


1950

Married the Dome House client's daughter • Returned to Italy. Undertook research and in 1951 submitted proposal, "Cosmic Potentials," to Massachusetts Institute of Technology investigating relationship of sun energy expressed in infrared, hydrologic power and tidal changes to human habitats.


1951-54

First daughter Kristina was born. Built a camper, Leoncino, on a small car frame and traveled down to Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast, south of Naples, to study ceramics. Commissioned to design and build a large ceramics factory, "Artistica Ceramica Solimene."

Came back to the United States and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his late wife Colly and daughter Kristina.
1956

Moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, purchasing the land that later became the Cosanti Foundation complex in Paradise Valley. Construction of Soleri's experimental Earth House on that land. Construction continues at Cosanti until 1975.

Drawings for multi-functional bridges submitted for the Luxembourg Bridge Competition • Work begun on his Mesa City project: a design of a city of two million population in an area the size of Manhattan Island; project consisted of large colored drawings of the plan of the city • Honorable mention, Solar House Competition, Association for Applied Solar Energy, Phoenix, AZ • Second daughter Daniela was born.

Received grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts for work on his Mesa City project.

Mesa City Project included in the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, exhibition, Visionary Architecture • Continued development of urban design theory, and began production of silt-cast architectural models.

Founded the Cosanti Foundation, a non-profit, educational foundation which serves as the umbrella organization through which Soleri's philosophical, educational, research and construction work is performed.

Awarded AIA (American Institute of Architects) Gold Medal for Craftsmanship • Sponsorship begun of Workshops accredited by the College of Architecture, Arizona State University at Tempe, for the construction of studios and other structures to house Cosanti Foundation facilities.

Visit to twenty universities with exhibitions, craft work and slide lectures • Received a Guggenheim Fellowship for research in the field of "architecture as human ecology" in his Mesa City project • Macro-Cosanti, a planned community to be built in central Arizona, was launched as a Cosanti Foundation project • Two Urbanists: The Architecture of Buckminster Fuller and Paolo Soleri, Museum of Modern Art, Rose Art Museum, Brandeise University, Walthan, MA

Cosanti Foundation incorporated in Arizona • A second Guggenheim Fellowship awarded for further research in the arcology concept • Presented a paper, "The Genesis of Leisure," to the fourth annual Symposium on American Values, Man Working, Central Washington State College.

Received a Guggenheim grant to complete the work that ultimately was published by the M.I.T. Press in Arcology: The City in the Image of Man (1969).

Funded by Rutgers University, embarked upon project to design an urban transportation system nucleus in the State of New Jersey: "3-D Jersey" which resulted in a single-structure, three-dimensional city design to be located in the New York-Philadelphia corridor. The Ford Motor Company contributed computer time to supply essential data relating to transportation within this structure for one million people.

The Architectural Vision of Paolo Soleri, at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.; the exhibition then traveled to several large museums in the United States and Canada. In conjunction with the large exhibit, a comprehensive photographic exhibit circulated to smaller museums, art galleries and universities, resulting in large numbers of participants at the Arcosanti Workshops that launched the construction of the world's first Arcology in Central Arizona • Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia, PA.

American tour of this exhibit organized by the Association of Science and Technology Centers. Launched lecture-exhibit • Toward Arcology - Works In Progress (The Van Show), touring to thirty American universities •
Received commission to design Indio Palm Park Center for Riverside County (CA.) - a park center utilizing solar energy for intensive horticulture, heating and cooling of the facility.
