Ecological Design Workshop
To learn the techniques of bio-remediation residents
from Arcosanti, and other students attended a workshop
by Ocean Arks International.
|
The Workshop was
proctored by Marc
Companion from Ocean Arks International. Here
Marc displays a “bulkhead” used in
the plumbing of the Living Machine. |

|
 |
The workshop
was held at Prescott
College, and the Living Machine was built
for the garden behind the Organic Alley Café,
(217 Garden St. Prescott, AZ (928) 778-2090,). |
|
The system was
a simple design, made of a series of fifty-five
gallon drums plumbed together. |

|
 |
Each tank would
then act as a “cell” of the eco-system
to digest waste-water from the restaurant kitchen. |
The drums emptied
into a small constructed wet-land, the final stage
of treatment.
|

|
 |
With the “Machine”
part constructed the Workshop went on a field
trip to gather aquatic plants, and mud saturated
with micro-organisms from the natural environment.
|
The tanks were
then seeded with the collected life. Over time
the organisms will self organize into small eco-systems,
that would then treat the waste water in successive
steps.
