An International Conference TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE URBANIZATION was held in Suzhou, China on October 14 - 17. 2005. The aim of the conference is to rethink current forms of urbanization and to envision and promote new concepts of urbanization in China and the West. Paolo Soleri, visionary architect and creator of the concept of ARCHITECTURAL ECOLOGY or ARCOLOGY, delivers the keynote address.

Following the visit to Rome, with only a 2-day stop at Arcosanti, Paolo Soleri and Tomiaki Tamura set off to China. Alumnus Francis Frick currently resides in Hong Kong and joins Paolo and Tomiaki at a group session during the conference in Suzhou. Paolo presents SOLARE, A LINEAR CITY at this event and other conferences during this 2-week visit to China. Paolo conceived the SOLARE design as a proposal for a rational approach to the tremendous growth of the building industry in China.

This is the eleventh year that HUMAN NATURE Dance Theater spends a week of intensive workshops and nightly performances at the Colly Soleri Music Center. The theme of this seasons exercise TOUCH AND GO explored through movement how we relate to each other. The final performance on Saturday evening celebrated an event of freeform and spontaneity and expressed a humorous yet very sensitive look at the frailty and beauty of human relationships.

Colly Soleri Music Center welcomes back HUMAN NATURE Dance Theater. This is the 11th year that this group from Flagstaff, AZ comes for a 7-day workshop. Morning, afternoon and evening practice and performances accumulate in a public performance on Saturday evening, October 15. 2005.
The performance this year, TOUCH AND GO takes a humorous yet sensitive look at how we relate to each other. How do we touch each other? What is taboo? What connects us? It addresses intimacy, attraction, sexuality, aggression, tenderness andloss. The show is challenging, bold and full of questions. Cosanti Foundation welcomes Dinah Yessne to the new position of On-Site Tourism and Guest Services Manager. Dinah returned in mid September to start this position. Dinah completed her workshop in March 2003 and returned for three month in February 2005 to set up the Human Resources Department, which now is headed by Matteo Di Michele.

Guest services had a busy week last week. On Monday, Sept. 26, a group of 40 architecture students from
SCIARC School of Architecture in Los Angeles visited for an over-night stay. The students met with Paolo Soleri for a question and answer session.

Arizona Planning Association had their annual conference in Prescott AZ. During this event fifteen city planners visited Arcosanti on Friday, Sept. 30. for lunch and a special tour. They also met with Paolo Soleri for a session of questions and answers.
On Saturday a group of 9 students from the Colorado Mountain College stayed overnight. The students are on their way to Baja on a field study trip.[Photo & text: sa]

The 24th Annual Colly Concert featured Sonya Kumiko Lee. Sonya delighted her audience with a passionate and powerful performance of pieces by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, three modern pieces by Alberto Ginastera, the Dumka by Tchaikovsky and pieces by Chopin.
Sonya Lee began her musical studies at the age of three. Since winning her first competition at age seven, Sonya Lee has gone on to win top prizes in national and international piano competitions. Sonya Lee has been heard in concert in such halls as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincol Center, Steinway Hall, the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado, the Salles de Colonnes at the Chateau Fontainebleau and Bel Ebat Parc in France, Aoyama Hall in Osaka, Japan and the Honeni Temple in Kyoto, Japan among other. Miss Lee has been the featured soloist with festival orchestras throughtout Southern California and the with Juilliard Alumni Champer Orchestra at the Proshansky Auditorium at City Universities in NYC. In 1998 Miss Lee was presented in her NY Recital Debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as the winner of Artist International's Debut Series Award. The following year, Miss Lee recived the Outstanding Alumni Series Award in Piano and was presented in her Lincol Center Recital Debut at Alice Tull Hall. Last October, Miss Lee was presented in her Japan Recital debuts in Osaka and Kyoto, Japan. In the spring, Miss Lee was invited to give a lecture/recital for the acting students of NYU in conjunction with the Stella Adler Conservatory. In May 2005, Miss Lee returned to Japan to give a master class and to give a guest performance at the World Music Day Festival in Osaka. Miss Lee holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from The Juilliard School where she was the studen of Oxana Yablonskaya and Emanues Ax. Sonya-Kumico Lee is the daughter of alumnus Doug Lee, who worked with Paolo Soleri during many of the early years of the Cosanti Foundation. Doug is a member of the Cosanti Foundation Board of Directors.

The menu consisted of Roasted Red Pepper and Coconut Soup, Mixed Green Salad with Sweet Pecans, Blue Cheese, Pears and Arcosanti Peach Vinaigrette Dressing, Butternut Squash with Orange Cranberry Glaze, Broccoli Rabe with Roasted Garlic, Portobello Pizzas with Fresh Tomatoes and Goat Cheese, Flank Steak on Greens with Mango and Pepper Sauces and for dessert a Hazelnut Custard with rasped Chocolate Flakes.
