An Evening with Soleri started with a conviviality at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art at St. Petersburg College featuring a dedication of a Soleri sculpture (hanging in the background), donated by Tom and Pat Lehnen to the museum. The sculpture is the original maquette designed by Soleri for the much larger version called 'Il Zeffiro' installed at The Neiman-Marcus in Scottsdale Arizona.

?

The evening attracted a large audience for the presentation of Solare: Lean Linear City, an alternative urban development, suggested by Soleri.

Workshop participants take a class in the basics of drywall installation. First, the drywall sheet is measured and cut to fit the wall. Location of metal studs are marked to determine where screws will be attached.

?

After measuring the sheet of drywall, class participant Anna makes a cut using a T-square ruler and utility knife.

?

Instructor Angus Gluck demonstrates the Roto Zip tool as he cuts out the opening for an electrical outlet box. This is done after the sheet has been installed to ensure a close cut against the box.

?

Once the sheet has been properly secured, the next step is the covering of seams and screw holes with drywall joint compound, also known as mud. Angus tapes a seam with paper tape and then adds the first of three layers of mud. When dry this will be sanded smooth before the next layers are added. All irregularities will be covered before the wall is painted.

The waterpump house, which contains the pump and its controller, is located at the foot of the Arcosanti Mesa. The well is located under the pump house and water used on the Arcosanti site is obtained from this well. The area surrounding the pump house doors needs a new concrete footing.

The concrete form is prepared in various steps. Dimensions of the form are laid out and stakes are put into the ground to hold the wood panels in place. Water is poured onto the ground to keep the surface moist. Then a layer of plastic and wire mesh is put in place. Metal stakes are drilled into the original concrete foundation to hold the new concrete to its surface.

?

The concrete mix is prepared and everyone helps bring the concrete in buckets to fill up the form.

?

When the form is filled the surface is leveled with a screed and the toweled to ensure a clean surface. The concrete is then colored using a dry powder pigment mixed onto the top of the concrete.

Chieko Shimizu is serving an apprenticeship in the bronze foundry. She graduated with a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts in Metal Craft from the Tama Art University in Tokyo.

This is a special training program with bronze sculptor Cliff Hersted, who puts together Paolo Soleri Special Assemblies at Arcosanti. Paolo hand carves styrofoam pieces, which are sand cast into aluminum and bronze elements. These elements, combined with bells of various sizes, are then assembled into mobile sculptures.

?

Chieko sand cast each element of this, her first, completed Special Assembly. She also hand-carved and cast some of the connecting elements. The foundry crew had a special celebration to commemorate this completion, and Chieko christens the assembly with champagne. For more information on Soleri Special Assemblies, please consult the Cosanti web-site under Soleri Bells On-line, Special Assemblies.

Chieko is a second generation Arcosanti participant. This photo was taken during Arcosanti Alumni Japan Reunion in 1982 in Yokohama, Japan. The small child is Chieko with her father, alumnus Keiji Shimuzu. Kenji was part of the Arcosanti crew from November 1978 to August 1979. He attended a wood workshop and was part of the drafting crew. Keiji did interior wood work on the lab building, the machine shed and the Cosanti Gallery. He also did finishing work on the swimming pool, foundation work on the East Crescent, worked on the experimental greenhouse in camp and did some interior work in the Crafts III gallery.
