Arcosanti hosts the 15. annual, week-long, benefit Trail Ride Meeting of CABALLOS DES SOL. A self-sufficient little town has been set up in the second field below the Arcosanti site, with trucks, horse-trailers, portable showers and amenities.

About 150 participants have arrived from all over the U.S. A large tent provides meals and dancing, singing, a raffle and Karaoke, even an animal talent show, for evening entertainment.
Riders gather each mornings for different trail rides.

This is the second time that the group meets at Arcosanti. Caballos Del Sol is a charity ride; the group donates proceeds to worthy causes like Rainbow Acres in Camp Verde, a facility for developmentally challenged adults.

To continue the report from 3/26/07, concrete for the first part of the ramp has been poured and construction volunteers Darina Trendafilova and Brendan Maloney even the surface with a wooden guide.
Part of the workshop participants work with crew leader Ron Chandler. Ron teaches how to achieve the exact mixture of concrete for the surface intended.
The concrete mixture slides down this ramp into a waiting wheel barrow.

[from upper left] The second section of the ramp is ready for concrete to be poured. The concrete has been finished to a very smooth surface. Now David and Darina engrave the appearance of pavers that are of the same size as the individual path pavers around the new wall.
March 4. workshop participants work with David Tollas to learn concrete craft.

To continue the report from 3/21/07, the section of the new path entering the forecourt of the Ceramics Apse is complete. The crew used a concrete mix with large gravel and scrubbed the surface before it completely hardened. This type of surface provides good traction.
The path on the east side of the new wall has been leveled and compacted. It is not as easy as it looks to get the pavers lined up at exact height and distance from each other.
The whole crew is at work on the north side of the new wall. This area has to be landscaped for a zig-zag ramp to provide easier access for visitors with handicap limitations. This report will continue on 3/26/07.

To continue the report on construction of the new visitors path around the north side of the Crafts III bulding, this sequence is about the small area leading to the Ceramics Apse. The level of the path has been brought up to the new level of the retaining wall and pavers have been put back into place [viewed from east].
[same area viewed from west] The area where the path enters the forecourt of the Ceramics Apse, is prepared for a new concrete slab to be poured. This will make a nice even access for handicapped visitors.

David Tollas teaches each step from preparation of the form, the mix of concrete, concrete distribution and finishing, to two workshop participants, Lauren Wessler and Maggie Lamb, from the February workshop. This pour happened some weeks ago. We are trying to catch up on all of the exciting new construction. More to come on 3/23/07.

43 students from Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, visited Arcosanti for an overnight stay. This size group was a real challenge for guest services, but enough beds were prepared between all of the guestrooms, Sky suite, East Crescent dormrooms in Unit 6 and Unit 10, and the dormroom in East Crescent 3.
[Photo: Julian Lauzzana & text: sa]
The students arrived late in the evening with departure scheduled for 10am the next moring. Site Director Tomiaki Tamura gave a Powerpoint show with an overall introduction [in japanese] to Paolo Soleri, Arcology and Arcosanti. A tour of the site included a visit to the foundry during a bronze pour.

Paolo Soleri was on site and graciously signed books that the students purchased. The students had a very enthusiastic visit.
The upcoming weeks are busy for the Visitors Center and Guest Services. Scheduled group visits include Michigan State University, Cottonwood Middle School, a Women's Spritual Retreat, a Cowboy Jamboree, an AMP Seminar, 4th Grade class from Prescott New Horizons School, Linda Martin Yoga Group and UNM School of Architecture.

The next project for the metalshop crew is a new railing for part of the path under re-construction behind the Crafts III building. The path has been leveled to accommodate access for handicapped visitors. This meant that it had to be lowered in some places and brought up higher in others. Metal shop coordinator Philip Bonham and assistant Jeffrey Meylan take measurement for the new railing.
The frame of the railing was completed and the metalshop crew moved it into place temporarily to ensure an exact fit. Some concrete construction of the path is going on at the same time. A report on this will post 3/21/07.
The railing is back in the metalshop and Pilip and Jeffrey now weld in the individual spokes. This report will continue.

On Friday, March 2., the Greater Phoenix Multi-Cultural and Arts Foundation organized SAVOR! - an exclusive event to tempt the senses with "global fusion," where
high-profile chefs and musicians masterfully blended foods, music and dance from all over the world. In addition, guest were able to relax and mingle in the Earth lounge, enjoy the fresh outdoors on the Air patio, see inspired art in the Liquid gallery, choose from select wines and desserts in the Fire VIP section, and witness bold displays of Heart and Soul during the evening's Live Auction. The event took place in the e4 club at 4282 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ.
Honoree of this event was Paolo Soleri.
[Photos: tt & text: from Savor event announcements, sa]
One of the highlights of the event was a display of Soleri models, as well as a multi media presentation to promote Arcosanti and the Arcology idea. The 4 hour event was very popular with an attendence estimated at around 1000 people, well over the expected attendence of 500 - 700 people. Proceeds will benefit various programs provided through the Greater Phoenix Multi-Cultural and Arts Foundation.

On display in the amazing Liquid Gallery were the Nudging Space and the Arcosanti 5000 model. The mission of the Greater Phoenix Multi-Cultural and Arts Foundation is to establish and promote social welfare programs that educate the community about ethnic diversity and its role in economic development; that eliminate prejudice and discrimination and that promote the arts in the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

Arcosanti alumni and recent resident Ben Powell passed away on March 2, 2007. Among many things, Ben will be remembered here on site as a metal-worker extraordinaire, for his creations and contributions in the Bronze Foundry; for his brief but memorable stint as a dinner cook in the Arcosanti Café (where his culinary career reached an apex with the dish Shrimp n’ Grits); and together with his girlfriend and companion Sarah Beth Kurzhals, for bringing Camp and the Agriculture operation to new heights of productivity and organization. The garlic is growing heartily, the chickens are finally laying eggs, and the Octagon has never been so clean.
An experimental musician with a penchant for unconventional performance spaces (riverbeds, roadsides, rooftops….), Ben was always concerned, caring, and supportive to those around him. He was a whaler at heart, with a set of tattoos that would make anyone jealous.
It is with love and sympathy that we extend our condolences to Ben’s family and Sarah Beth. You are in our thoughts and hearts.
Thank you for being with us, Ben. We are grateful to have known you.
