Arcosanti alumni and recent resident Ben Powell passed away on March 2, 2007. Among many things, Ben will be remembered here on site as a metal-worker extraordinaire, for his creations and contributions in the Bronze Foundry; for his brief but memorable stint as a dinner cook in the Arcosanti Café (where his culinary career reached an apex with the dish Shrimp n’ Grits); and together with his girlfriend and companion Sarah Beth Kurzhals, for bringing Camp and the Agriculture operation to new heights of productivity and organization. The garlic is growing heartily, the chickens are finally laying eggs, and the Octagon has never been so clean.
An experimental musician with a penchant for unconventional performance spaces (riverbeds, roadsides, rooftops….), Ben was always concerned, caring, and supportive to those around him. He was a whaler at heart, with a set of tattoos that would make anyone jealous.
It is with love and sympathy that we extend our condolences to Ben’s family and Sarah Beth. You are in our thoughts and hearts.
Thank you for being with us, Ben. We are grateful to have known you.

Ben meant a great deal to me as a fellow artist and was one of the very very few friends I had during a difficult period in my life, and a caring, considerate, mentor of a friend at that.
