Christmas was quiet here, a lot of staff and volunteers went home for the holidays. The Tollas family opened their beautiful home in the Foundry Apse for their annual Christmas Eve party and lots of fun was had by everyone.
Alumnus Tim Brinduse and his wife Jill visited for Christmas Eve. Tim treated everyone to one of his great blues harmonica sessions.
Christmas dinner was a sumptious and delicious pot-luck at East Crescent Unit 1, hosted by residents Darina Trendafilova, Melanie Husband and Charlie.
It has been super cold, with an intense and bitter wind from the north and last night the whole lake froze, a very rare event.

In the midst of this bitter cold season, thoughts of summer and it's intense heat are very welcome. One of the projects during this past summer, that has not been mentioned on Today@Arcosanti, has been the COB construction of a new chicken coop in the Arcosanti gardens.
Construction crew member Maggie Lamb designed the structure and held several workshops to teach Cob technique.
[from left] Trenches for the walls of the structure have been dug and filled with gravel. Maggie Lamb and helper.
Beth and Jose put together the framework around a footer of gravel and reclaimed concrete pavers.

Workshop participants helped raise the walls made of 2x4s and reclaimed foam and wire panels. This report continues on 1/2/08.

We last reported on 12/21 about work on the visitors parking lot. The lot has been enlarged and covered with a layer of ABC gravel.
Now large trucks deliver loads of a local rock called Black Canyon Gold, for the final layer.
All the concrete work was completed by local contractor Lane Malouff and his crew now distributes and levels the gravel.

The lot was closed for a few days and has now been re-opened just in time for holiday visitors. This completes the report of the first phase of work possible due to a $50,000 tourism development grant from the Arizona Office of Tourism.
The grant work report continues in a few weeks with installation of a solar electric system that will provide additional night lighting.

The crew finishes this long concrete curb. Cosanti Foundation has received a $50,000 tourism development grant from the Arizona Office of Tourism for work that will include a major upgrade of the Visitors Parking Lot, as well as an ADA pathway leading from the parking lot to the Bakery level entrance, additional night lighting, and a solar photovoltaic system to power the lights.

This same pour included the first part of the concrete walk-way that connects with the existing visitors path. The parking lot will be covered with an initial layer of ABC gravel. The final layer of material will be completed with a local rock called Black Canyon Gold.

Work has begun in earnest on the parking lot area. Employees of the Cosanti Foundation surveyed the area once more and formalized the final design. As well, we removed the current paving stones and other items to clear the way for the construction process.

We hired a local contractor to prepare the parking surface and build the concrete curb and walkway.

Thus several items that were detailed in the grant application will be combined in one contract figure, coming from Lane Malouff. Additional rock and gravel will be provided by All About Rock, again a local supplier.

Report continues on 12/19/07.

Paolo Soleri, with the exuberant help of elf Jeffrey Michael, gave out individual Christmas bonuses. Everyone also received a tiny commemorative bronze bell and a new edition of Quaderno #3, Earth Casting. It was a lot of fun.

We continue the report from 12/7/07 about interior finishing work of Unit 10 in the East Crescent. Construction intern Cameron Wilson cuts and installs moisture proof drywall and touches up the ceiling in the back hallway that leads to the small studio apartment.
Alumnus Angus Gluck, wizard of fine plastering, stopped in for a day to finish the surface of the ceiling with weather proof coating.
The apartment faces north and east and is a small self-contained studio with kitchen and bathroom. See 9/26/07 for plan of the apartment and location of the back hallway.
The back entrance to the apartment is hidden on Angus' left side. The door in view at the back of the hallway is a back entrance to what is now a recreation room [see report 9/3/2006] and library [report 12/4/2006].

To continue the report from 12/3, interior work proceeds on the first floor in the back part of Unit 10 in the East Crescent. Construction crew leader Melissa Soluskie works on the outer wall of the small bathroom. There is a space left on the upper part of the wall and over the door. This will be filled with glass block, to let some light into this window-less space.

Construction intern Cameron Wilson finishes details over the entrance door.

Workshop participant Claudia Giuliana finishes drywall in the main room. This is a studio apartment with windows facing north and east. See 9/26/2007 report for lay-out.

We continue our report from 11/30/07 of interior construction on the first floor in the back apartment of Unit 10 of the East Crescent. The walls in the small bathroom were finished with a water-proof drywall sheeting. Sheet edges and fastener heads have been mudded and painted with water-proof coating.
Construction crew leader Melissa Soluski works on one of several layers of the shower pan.
The shower base is built in three layers. A pre pan of deck-mud, a concrete mortar, is spread on the concrete surface and molded into the shape of the shower pan, with a slight slope towards the shower drain. A CPE vinyl membrane is spread over this layer. The membrane comes up on all three walls and is folder over the step of the pan. Once this vinyl layer has been tested for any leaks, Melissa installs a layer of wire mesh.
Another layer of deck-mud is poured, which is reinforced by the wire mesh. The surface has to cure and we will continue to report on this location when tile installation starts.
The report on general interior work in this apartment continues on 12/7/07.
