This past Saturday the Colly Soleri Music Center hosted an evening of ballet, as well as the beautiful voices of Guillermo Ontiveros and Adam Marr. Also, by popular demand, Jim Covarrubias returned and painted a piece on the stage before our eyes. Two of his paintings were raffled to lucky audience members.

Terpsicore Dance Company opened with several pieces. The highlight of the evening was a delightful performance by the West Valley Conservatory of Ballet, "Peter and the Wolf", arranged by Stephanie Savage. Here is the duck swimming in a pond of very young dancers.

The cat is stalking the duck and the bird. In the background is the grandfather, who is telling the story, and on the pedestal we can see Peter, warning duck and bird.

And a thoroughly menacing wolf enters the scene ...

A terrific bird and cat, beautifully executed performances.

Everyone is listening, the wolf swallowed the poor duck whole? In the back of the group we can see the hunters, who were very funny and very good in their roles. The whole performance was gorgeous, very well danced, lighthearted, with skill and precision, beautiful costumes. Congratulations, very, very well done!

This continues our report from 4/18/2012. The concert started as scheduled in the Colly Soleri amphitheater, but as the weather worsened the event was moved into the Crafts III cafe.
Here we see THE BACK PORCH BANDITS.

and TRADITIONAL BLUEGRASS. Arizona Highway 69 Chamber member and volunteer Jerry Schultz said all of the bands who came Saturday complimented the venue and said they wanted to return next year. Schultz said the Chamber has talked about a tentative date of May 4. in 2013, a little later to hopefully dodge late spring storms.

As Heidi Dahms Foster said so well in todays article in the local BIG BUG NEWS, "Wind, hail, snow, rain sleet and freezing temperatures didn't dampen the enthusiasm of a small group of die-hard bluegrass fans". Morning preparation started around 6 am under grey skies and very cold and windy conditions. Here we see the crew setting up sound equipment and a sound board.

The opening ceremonies started with an invocation by Lloyd Yarbrough, Pastor of the Calvary Bible Church in Mayer. Colors were presented by the Cordes Lakes Memorial American Legion Post 122 and Heidi Dahms-Foster sang the National Anthem. And there was a welcome from Mayer Justice of the Peace Bill Rummer and County Supervisor Tom Thurman.

The second annual HI-COUNTRY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL failed to reach its potential because of the weather, but organizers and Arcosanti pulled together to give those who braved the elements a great experience. Popular local THE POTATO PATCH BAND was the only band to play on Colly Soleri Amphitheater stage before the wind and rain drove everyone inside.

The performance moved into the Crafts III cafe and here are the dynamic Teluride Winners RUN BOY RUN. More photos to come on Friday, April 20. 2012.

Many things are happening in preparation for this years Bluegrass Festival. Additional parking has been marked out.
A very large parachute was folded in half and strong ropes have been tied to the lines. The parachute will be mounted above the stage and connected to the finger panels around the East Crescent, to shade participants in the Colly Soleri Amphitheater.
Scaffolding has been erected on the stage for parachute installation, but the weather turned cold today and very windy. Dark clouds sailed in and we had a little bit of rain. The parachute was rolled up and stored in the back of the stage for installation tomorrow or Friday.

The bakery balcony on the west-side of Crafts III is sheltered from the wind and the maintenance crew is installing triangular shades. More to come.
