POSITION OVERVIEW
The Agriculture Assistant Manager will work to cultivate produce to aid and supply the regular meal service at our in-house café at Arcosanti. A weekly Farmers Market for residents, when adequate produce is available, is also part of the position responsibility. Also, depending on production, participating in local Farmers Markets. Customers include our 60-70 residents and staff, workshop and event participants, daily guests and visitors.
The ongoing work in agriculture will be immersed in the daily activities of the Arcosanti community. The expectation is that working in agriculture be one of many departments that coordinate for Farm-To-Table workshops, synergies, revolving recycling duties, events help and choice to participate in the many parts of the project that are ongoing.
This is a manual labor position which requires bending, squatting, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. It also will include moving, lifting, and dumping of materials 50 pounds or more. The job may also encounter dirt, dust, mud, and smells of animal manure.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Report to the Agriculture General Manager daily for tasks and updates.
- Make daily education of volunteers and workshop participants a priority.
- Ability to lead by example, be on time, and maintain a mutually respectful relationship with a team of fellow workers.
- Plants, tends, and harvests produce at the various on site locations based on timing and demand.
- Handles, processes, and stores produce based on GHP/GAP standards and educates others on these standards.
- Experience with pest and weed control
- Weekly checking and proper disposal of past produce.
- Instructing workshop groups in agriculture, aiding in group activity management and organizing of planned daily meals in coordination with Cafe staff.
- Weekly delivery of produce to Cafe and Residents Farmers’ Market or CSA.
- Setup, sale, and teardown of Residents Farmers Market.
- Creating, flipping, and pulling planting locations for continued use and new plantings in greenhouses, guest-raised beds, orchard and Food forest.
- Help track produce and plan seasonal rotation, aid in the creation of seasonal value reports.
- Attend all required meetings and report work hours weekly.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 year minimum experience in any type of farming, food processing, or cooking in a farm-to-table operation.
- Accomplished organization & communication skills.
- Patience, and willingness to be a teacher at every opportunity. Actual time in teaching situations is valued.
- Current Arizona Food Handler Card
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Proficiency using data management software
- Familiarity with inventory management
- Experience using a P.O.S. system
- Knowledge of hydroponic, sustainable, organic, and/or indigenous agriculture is highly valued.
